Maya Beiser in Concert
Co-presented with Bang on a Can Join us for an evening of solo cello performance by the accomplished instrumentalist Maya Beiser held in conjunction with the exhibition Sacred Splendor: Jewish Ritual Art and Christian Treasures from St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague (on view through Feburary 7, 2027).– To mark Steve Reich’s 90th birthday this fall, Beiser will perform Steve Reich’s “ Cello Counterpoint ” (2003), along with compositions by Michael Gordon, Arvo Pärt, David Lang, and Johann Sebastian Bach. “I wanted to center the program on “ Cello Counterpoint “, the work Steve wrote for me in 2003. On one side are Bach and Arvo Pärt, composers whose music Reich has long held close. On the other are Michael Gordon and David Lang, composers who were deeply influenced by him,” states Maya Beiser. Reich’s minimalist work was also a source of inspiration for artist and writer Edmund de Waal whose piece t ehillim (2018), is currently installed as part of the exhibition.
